Well, Glenn pissed me off before, but he pushed me over the edge when I found him using a fake Tom Paine as a mouth piece for his horse shit opinions. www.youtube.com This is the link to the Thomas Paine episode of the Mark Steel Lectures. @captcrais101 thanks for favouriting, what’s wrong with the term welfare state though?
It makes us sound like we are in the business of keeping people poor instead of using government power to help them become independent of government help.
what on earth r u talking about? whos promoting a conservative agenda? me? or my country? if u mean my country u r mistaken. u obviously have no idea what is going on in the US if u said we’re promoting a conservative agenda and you seem to have no idea what ur talking about in general. you dont live here, u have no idea wats going on here. i love how people from other countries think they know that they have a solid idea of whats going on in a country they dont even live in..amazing lol
No I was saying that this fake Thomas Paine (and Glenn Beck and Fox News) is promoting a conservative agenda when the real Thomas Paine was the ultimate democratic progressive. Don’t you get it? And I don’t see you speaking up for democratic progressivism, you seem like one of those conservative sheeple.
first of all, ive tried to tell many people this on this comment thing..beck never had any intention to quote the real thomas paine it was just something to get the people involved more with the tea parties and for people to stand up against big govt since our country was never founded on that in the first place. and more importantly, i certainly am a conservative! like i said before, if u saw what that trash you call progressivism is doing/what it did to our country youd think twice my friend
Well there’s bad progressivism, which is a small group in a powerful centralised government making decisions, and there’s good progressivism, where public policy for the nation or the world is decided by consensus upon thorough public open discussions. There is such a thing as right and wrong in terms of the best possible public policies for the world or a nation, it just needs wider scrutiny to get it right. Surely you don’t think good lawmaking and bad-law-repealing should NEVER happen?
the first definition u gave on progressivism is wats going on in our country, maybe not to its fullest extent but its definitely going on..Obama said he was a progressive along with Clinton, Pelosi, and many other people in power. I think laws should be well thought out before they are made to begin with. give the public the option on what they think about a law/bill..after all, the govt should be working for us. ur second defintion of progressivism sounds really like a democracy or republic
Cut you slack for not doing your research before bashing someone?! Get real.
JackBrindelli, it may help your standing if you learn to spell. Have you read the book “Common Sense”? May be you should and read the philosophy that Paine and many other wrote instead of reading only side. Knowing the history of a person is good, but knowing what they had thought is better… that is why Paine was a philosopher.
@jiminy54 The USA is a republic and not a democracy. But here is what great about the country, the freedom for expression of our ideas as form speech and as listener you are free to walk away or change to channel or station.
@Tony2581 Can you find fault in opinion expressed by one person. I may not agree with everything that someone makes. And here is the deal, Glenn Beck expresses his thoughts and isn’t a new reporter. Many people in the past that spoke their mind were killed… look at Socrates. He was full of thoughts and opinions. Spinoza was another one in which wasn’t liked. History is full of people expression their thoughts.
@JackWolfSchiner i know its a republic, i didnt mean to make it sound like it was a democracy lol…im glad we have that freedom too but im also not afraid to speak my mind when i see or hear something i may disagree with, i dont have to just ignore it..thats why i argued with this guys post a while ago
@jiminy54 I truely agree. But some people don’t know how to have a friendly debate without letting turn ugly. lol. glad to see that you aren’t one of those. Let freedom ring on!!!
Bob Basso is a fraud.
If anyone proves how shallow the right wing is intellectually it is Bob Basso and Glenn Beck. If they bothered to read Thomas Paine or even read about him they never would have made him their mascot.
Thomas Paine was a patriot because he believed America was the place where freedom could take hold.
Thomas Paine was a Liberal, read Agrarian Justice.
Good work.
@JackWolfSchiner
Read Paine’s Rights of Man, there is an extensive discussion of Republic and Democracy and Paine argues that a Republic is a state of law and a democracy can exist within a Republic.
@SamWiseGingy To understand the whole basis of the American government, you should read Two Treatise of Government written by John Locke in 1689 and read the Leviathan (1651 publication) by Thomas Hobbes in which influenced the philosophy of the writers of the Constitution of the United States and its Declaration of Independence.
@TheNavigateur If you don’t have more than one sourse of information and unable to filter though things, you are being played. Pick up a news paper anything other then watching TV. Just curious. How would defend yourself if you were in court for slander? Libel and slander, in law, types of defamation. Just curious.
@JackWolfSchiner The ONLY antidote to libel and slander is the right to reply for those who don’t have access to an equivalently large broadcast medium. I don’t like the term “fairness doctrine” but the “right to replies” doctrine (I know it’s stupid slogans but it’s an important emphasis). It’s hard to prove libel/slander: “I honestly thought he was the next Hitler” – maybe it WAS honest, so it must be allowed BUT answered! But if proven as deliberate lies, prosecution should follow.
@TheNavigateur Some how, I don’t think it would fall under that either. “Limitation of harm” includes the intent to harm someone’s reputation in which is a type of “yellow journalism”. Papers like you would find at the cashier’s line. Yes, they have been took to courts before. I was just curous. You are free to write what you want ’cause you don’t filter your stuff through AP or PA and don’t need to worry about a Code of Ethics, right?
@JackWolfSchiner Being honest in no way means you’re “intending to harm someone’s reputation”. Think of it the other way, let’s say a well-respected police officer (or official) threatened your family and committed extortion and was able to get away with it. Should you be allowed to speak up about it? Do you see what I mean?
@TheNavigateur My dear friend you stated your pointed clearly and I tip my hat to you. I must admit that I have enjoyed our debate here. Just remember one thing people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are not journalist. They deal with opinions. One of my friends once told me, “opinions are like a**holes and everyone has one.”
I think you are using the term “traditional values” too broadly. At the time he opposed the monarchy yes, but that is not a “traditional value” that Mr. Beck is exemplifying. Paine never opposed organized religion, you may, but not Thomas Paine. Your equation of traditional = full of shit (so mature and edgy by the way) is awful, you want to imply Glenn Beck and Mr. Paine don’t share values based upon this argument which isn’t an argument so much as a misunderstanding of what values are.
You are also suggesting that society in the realm of values is moving forward, which I must disagree with as well. Crime is higher than ever, divorce rate, drug use, problems that in Paine’s time were not even conceivable have arisen. You sir are in fact moving backwards.
@radicalezra Crime is actually at record low.
